Achieving aspirations
Meet Martin McGrath, Multi-Site Customer Experience Manager for Wandsworth & Wandsworth Southside Fitness & Wellbeing Centre. Martin joined us in 2011 and shares his story with us so far.
Tell us about your career progression at Nuffield Health?
I started as a newly qualified Personal Trainer at the Croydon Fitness & Wellbeing Centre in 2011. While there, I progressed to become the top performing PT at the club and was afforded the opportunity to deputise for the Fitness Manager while she was on Maternity Leave. When she decided not to return to the role, I was made permanent Fitness Manager. In that time I managed to grow the club’s PT revenue never missing a target in 18 months. In 2015, I was offered the opportunity to challenge myself and transfer to the Cheam Fitness & Wellbeing Centre as Maternity Cover Deputy General Manager. While there, I learned so much about the wider business of running the centre even deputising for the General Manager on several occasions. Following this, I returned to Croydon briefly as Fitness Manager before landing a permanent Deputy General Manager role at the Croydon Central club in 2016. I spent four and a half years at the club working closely with the small team we had in place to grow membership. I also had opportunities to develop myself personally and trained as Lifeguard Trainer Assessor.
In 2021, I moved to the Wandsworth Fitness & Wellbeing Centre as Deputy General Manager. This opportunity allowed me to work in a busier Tier 1 club where I could showcase my skillset and learn from the experienced General Manager. In 2023, my role changed to become Multi-Site Customer Experience Manager. In my current role, I work across both Wandsworth clubs where I manage Customer Experience (NPS) and all revenue lines. It is a challenging but rewarding role and has allowed me to develop a wider knowledge of leadership and management approaches.
Tell us about the team you work in?
As I work across two sites, I have two teams for every department I manage. I am fortunate to work with a mixture of people with differing experience and skill levels. In this role, I manage the heads of department rather than the individual team members which has aided me in my aspirations to becoming a General Manager.
Why have you stayed at Nuffield Health?
In my time with Nuffield Health I have been fortunate enough to work with some fantastic leaders who have given me opportunities to grow and progress myself both personally and professionally. Nuffield Health actively promote internal progression.
What’s your favourite thing about working at Nuffield Health?
The people I have had the pleasure of working with whether they be staff or members. I love sharing our passion for health and fitness.
What is your career highlight/s?
My greatest accomplishments throughout my career are when I have been able to utilise my knowledge and experience to develop and coach someone to achieve their aspirations. Knowing that I have had an influence on their success is very rewarding.
Would you recommend someone to join Nuffield Health?
I would definitely recommend someone to join Nuffield Health. I would not be in the position I am today without the guidance and support I have received from the leadership and teams across the multiple sites I have worked at.
Do you use any of the employee benefits?
I use the complimentary gym membership which I think is a fantastic way to keep our staff healthy and active.
