Tell us about your career progression at Nuffield Health?
Nuffield Health has been with my career since the beginning, I trained here as student from 2012-2014 and after qualifying, gaining experience and exposure in other hospitals and countries, I came back in April 2019. Starting as a theatre practitioner in anaesthetics and recovery, I have pushed for development and progress, becoming the Medical Device Lead for Cambridge Hospital in 2020. Still keen to learn more and help support our amazing team, I decided in 2021 to pursue the role of a Surgical First Assistant (SFA), completing the course in January 2022. Since then, I have moved out of my role in anaesthetics and recovery and have transitioned into being a Senior Theatre practitioner alongside my SFA and medical device lead role.
Tell us about the team you work in?
I work in a theatre multidisciplinary team, with skills ranging from Anaesthetics, Recovery, SFAs, Healthcare assistants, resus, endoscopy, sterile services and so many more. We all have to work together to ensure we give our patients the best care we can, always advocating for them and putting them at the forefront of everything we do.
Why did you choose to work at Nuffield Health?
Coming back to Nuffield Health was a bit like coming home in a way, it was where I learnt to become what I am today. Many of my mentors and colleagues are still here 12 years on, and it’s great to work alongside them.
What’s your favourite thing about working at Nuffield Health?
The people! We have a really great team here in theatres and across the other departments too! Through my role as a Medical Device Lead, I get to work with everyone, see how wards, outpatients, oncology, diagnostic imaging etc work. I enjoy supporting the theatres as an SFA, it has been a breath of fresh air into my career and has enabled me to develop my skills even further across a broader spectrum.
What are your career highlights?
Each progression is a highlight, each small step I take towards my goals, continually making sure that the patients are cared for as I would like to be cared for. Also, when working in paediatrics, there’s nothing quite like making an anxious toddler/child smile and finding common ground with them so they’re not too worried about what’s going on around them.
