Working together
Meet Cathy Bodie. Originally from the US, Cathy became a registered nurse in 1984 and now holds the role of Health & Safety and Facilities Coordinator at our Guildford Hospital.
How long have you been working in healthcare and what was the reason you got into it?
I've been working in healthcare for many years. My journey began in the US, where I initially majored in Physical Education but later transitioned to working in a hospital pharmacy, which sparked my interest in healthcare. I explored various roles, including an EMT starting in 1979 and later a National Registered Paramedic. Eventually, I became a registered nurse in 1984, specializing in paediatric trauma and emergency nursing, and also became an instructor for Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
What do you love about working for Nuffield Health?
Without a doubt, it's the people - the staff, the Consultants, and the patients. This hospital group has an underlying thread of caring. Here at Guildford, there is an atmosphere of kindness, cooperation, and genuine caring, which I believe touches everyone.
Have you completed any courses or qualifications whilst working for the hospital?
Yes, as an outpatient sister, I took the root cause analysis course for investigating RADAR, which was applicable to my role as hospital medical device lead. This wasn't about advancing my career but rather enhancing my contributions as I approached retirement.
What does your role involve?
My role as Health & Safety and Facilities Coordinator involves building cooperative relationships across departments, managing non-clinical compliance, and maintaining 1800 medical devices. I also ensure that maintenance issues are addressed promptly and that departments complete their health and safety audits. Guildford is one of the busiest hospitals in the Nuffield Health group, and this role has shown how much we can accomplish when we work together.
